#15: The Distant Lover

This man avoids intimacy; he remains aloof. He has to keep his distance, not only from his wife but also from himself.

The distant lover struggles with a lack of self-acceptance, which he’s learned to manage by projecting aloofness. Others may think he’s self-confident or even snobbish, but his standoffishness is about his discomfort with intimacy.

There’s usually a good reason why a lover is distant. If you’re in this category, you may have experienced either pain or coldness from your parents while growing up. You may have been hurt when you allowed yourself to be open in a previous relationship. You may have encountered hurtful peers as a child.

Whatever the reason, your distance interferes with your sex life. For example, you might regularly ask questions of your wife during lovemaking. With you in the inquiring role and her as respondent, you keep a safe distance.

Know yourself, open your heart, share yourself, and the comfort of closeness with your wife will follow.
